What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. A cataract occurs as part of the normal aging process and many aging patients develop cataracts. When the cataract makes the lens so cloudy that it impedes vision and makes it difficult for patients to perform everyday visual tasks, then it is best to have the lens removed through cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery Procedure

During cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, called an IOL or intraocular lens. Dr Goldberg numbs the eye and makes a small incision on the edge of the cornea, the clear outer covering of the eye. A device is used to remove the natural lens through this small incision. Once the natural lens has been removed, the artificial lens is placed in the same location. The procedure is painless and typically requires less than 30 minutes to perform. Patients can typically return to a normal routine the next day, but strenuous activity, such as heavy lifting is not advised immediately after surgery.

Who is a Candidate for Cataract Surgery?

A consultation with Dr. Goldberg can determine if you are a candidate for cataract surgery. He will use a device called a slit lamp to look at your natural lens, make a diagnosis of the cataract and determine the density of the cataract. He may also conduct tests to determine how much the cataract is affecting your vision. Once these tests are completed, and based on how the cataract is affecting your everyday routine, Dr. Goldberg can make a recommendation for surgery.
